Sustainability at MO’S Coffee

At MO’S Coffee, we're committed to delivering a quality experience in every cup – and doing so sustainably. For us, sustainability means minimizing our environmental footprint from farm to cup. This mission drives us to partner with a roastery that shares our commitment to eco-conscious practices. Here’s how MO’S Coffee is committed to a more sustainable coffee experience:

  1. Fair Trade Commitment

Our journey begins with responsibly sourced coffee, ensuring fair and stable prices for farmers. We are dedicated to ethical harvesting practices that minimize environmental impact while supporting coffee-growing communities.

  1. Certified Organic

MO’S Coffee is certified organic, meaning our beans are grown without synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or chemicals. Organic coffee cultivation promotes a healthy ecosystem, balancing sustainability with premium quality.

Our organic coffee production generates three main by-products, each repurposed for sustainability: coffee grounds, hessian bags, and coffee husks.

  1. Repurposing Coffee Grounds

Coffee grounds are rich in nutrients like nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus, making them ideal for composting and gardening. At MO’S, we compost our coffee grounds and encourage customers to do the same. Not only do these grounds enrich soil, but they also serve as a food source for mushrooms and a key ingredient in compost and fertilizers.

  1. Hessian (Jute) Bags

Most of our coffee is transported in 60 kg hessian bags, made from jute – a fast-growing, eco-friendly fiber. Over time, we’ve accumulated a significant number of these biodegradable bags. Rather than discarding them, we repurpose them in various ways, from garden and animal enclosures to DIY and crafting projects.

  1. Sustainable-Focused Roasting Equipment

Our roastery uses the advanced Brambati Ecodesign roaster, a testament to sustainability in the coffee roasting industry. Italian manufacturer Brambati developed this equipment to reduce energy use and emissions without compromising quality. This commitment has earned Brambati a Silver Certificate from EcoVadis for sustainability, marking them as a leader in eco-friendly coffee roasting technology. 1. Repurposed Coffee Husks

Coffee husks, the outer shell of the bean, are a nutrient-rich by-product that is typically discarded. At our roastery, we collect and compact these husks into “bricks” using Brambati’s innovative husk compact machine. These coffee husk briquettes are perfect for enriching compost, providing ground cover in gardens to retain moisture and deter weeds, and even serving as an eco-friendly alternative energy source. Additionally, they can be used in animal bedding, as soil enhancers in agricultural settings, or as fuel briquettes, offering a versatile and sustainable solution for what would otherwise be waste.

  1. Recyclable Packaging

Sustainable packaging is central to our commitment at MO’S. From the hessian bags used for transporting green coffee beans, to our consumer-sized coffee bags and case-size-cartons, all our packaging is recyclable. We also encourage customers to recycle their coffee grounds and packaging, promoting a cycle of sustainability that benefits everyone.

Together, we can make a positive impact on our world – one cup at a time!
