Why Aussie Coffee?

Australia is renowned for its distinct roasts and smooth finishes

According to Wikipedia, Australian coffee culture is world renowned. Australians are said to emphasise the sourcing of fresh coffee beans, innovative roasting processes, and the quality of the coffee brewing process.

Coffee culture in Australia has developed its own unique history and traditions, setting it apart from other coffee cultures globally. In the post-World War II period, immigration from Italy and Greece helped lay the foundations for Australia's coffee culture by introducing espresso and developing an appreciation for the espresso bar lifestyle. The first espresso bars emerged in the 1950s and 60s in major cities like Melbourne and Sydney, becoming popular social hubs for Italians and also for Australians eager to try this new intense, rich coffee brew.

Over time, Australian coffee culture expanded and evolved, gaining worldwide renown due to several interconnecting factors. To begin with, Australian roasters make an effort to source high quality, specialty coffee beans with a focus on ethical, sustainable practices. Additionally, coffee professionals hone their expertise in optimal roasting, grinding and brewing techniques to fully extract the best flavour from the beans. Australians have a spirit of innovation when it comes to coffee preparation, as evidenced by their creation of unique coffee styles like the Flat White which has spread globally.

The invention of the flat white, regarded as "Australia's greatest culinary export," may trace its origins to Australia in the 1980s. Its popularity has since expanded globally, gaining the most traction in North America and Europe.

Australian coffee innovation continues to this day, with the recent rise of ‘the Magic’. A magic coffee is made by brewing a double ristretto into a 5-ounce cup and pouring steamed milk on top, which makes it very similar to a flat white. The main differences are the use of ristretto instead of espresso and that magic coffee is served in a 5-ounce cup rather than the 6-ounce cup traditionally used for a flat white.

The Australian coffee industry places great emphasis on rigorous barista training and professionalism, ensuring quality results. Vibrant, and diverse cafe culture provides social spaces that reflect a commitment to both excellent coffee and memorable atmospheres with a combination of these complementary factors: quality beans, skilled preparation, innovative style, extensive training, and immersive cafes all working together to make Australian coffee exceptional.
